Survive Retirement and Stay Alive

Survive Retirement and Stay Alive

wisdom from route 66

I have been reading Billy Connolly’s book on his Route 66 road trip in the USA, and came across this observation: “Life is supposed to be fun. It’s not a job or an occupation. We’re only here once and we should have a bit of a laugh.”

Pretty good I thought, and ties in with another way of putting it: “too many guys make the mistake of thinking that their jobs are their lives”. Unfortunately this truth is often not realized until retirement - when the implications and ramifications hit you like a ton of bricks.

We see guys everyday coming into our community shed looking like stunned mullets. One of them said to me the last year: "I feel like I'm looking down the barrel of a gun".  Since then he's been coming along regularly and pitching in with community projects, enjoying the banter and the cameraderie. He said to me the other day: "Thank Christ for the Shed - it pretty much saved my life".

I replied: "Welcome to the club, mate, I feel the same way."
